Yellow Codeplug

Let's first start with what a codeplug is. The codeplug is the part of the radio programming that tells the transceiver what frequencies and configurations to use for the radio system. A group of scanner enthusiasts has coined the term "yellow codeplug" and setup a non-conventional way to create a codeplug to allow for monitoring of trunked public safety systems without transmitting on (or interfering with) the system. Also sometimes referred to a "yellow radio" however the radio can be any color you desire. P25 radios like the XTS 5000 do a better job of dealing with simulcast multi-path distortion than some scanners. Since these radios are end-of-life and no longer manufactured, they are easy to find at a reasonable price. Frequency information for trunked systems is publicly available on websites like Radio Reference.
